We’ve been fielding many calls from clients regarding the new CDC Dog Import requirements. As of July 22, 2024, the CDC has dropped many of the requirements for dogs entering the US from Canada, as long as the dog has been only in countries that are dog rabies-free or low-risk in the 6 months before entering or returning to the U.S.

In these cases, upon entrance into the US, the dog(s) must:

• Be at least 6 months of age
• Appear healthy upon arrival
• Must have a microchip that is either ISO-compliant or universally readable

They must also be accompanied by a CDC Dog Import Form, which is completed by the dog owner/importer. More details about this form can be found here. For dogs that have only been in Canada (or another rabies-free or low-risk country) for the 6 months prior to entry, you do not have to have your veterinarian sign off on any paperwork/forms, nor do you need veterinary records, as previously required. Dogs who have been in high-risk rabies countries are subject to different import restrictions and requirements, which can be found on the CDC website and are linked below.

Note that while vaccination for rabies is not required for US importation, it is required to return your dog back into Canada. We suggest all clients thus microchip and vaccinate their pet; not only for travel, but for general health and wellness. A rabies vaccination certificate will be provided.
