Wellness and Vaccination
Wellness- overall health and freedom from disease. Vaccination- to stimulate the body's resistance to a disease or virus. Both are extending the loving lives of our companion animals. Disease prevention is always less costly than dealing with the treatment of a disease once your pet has developed it. An example for dogs would be the treatment of parvovirus. Parvovirus treatment can frequently cost $1,500 or more while a single vaccination visit is less than $105. Feline leukemia is a retrovirus that your cat will live with for its life and may eventually succumb to the associated symptoms. After diagnosis, symptoms are controlled with hospital visits, medications and treatments but Feline Leukemia is not curable. To test for Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus is less than $90 and a single vaccination visit costs less than $105. Vaccinating is introducing the body to a disease, it will temporarily lower the immune system and can cause a elevation in temperature. If your pet already had a lowered immune system and a high temperature due to an underlying ailment or infection, vaccinations can worsen the already occurring issue. A physical exam is always performed prior to vaccinating as we want to ensure we are vaccinating a healthy pet. During appointments, we see the physical exam as the most important as symptoms of underlying diseases and illnesses can be discovered and further diagnostics explored. Early diagnosis of a disease can lead your pet to a longer, healthier life. For example, kidney disease, if diagnosed early, will allow us to modify your dog or cat's diet and in some cases add supplements to their diet to potentially extend their lives. There are many other conditions to which an early diagnosis is advantageous.
